Unlike many quilters, I don't have a family history of quilting. I didn't sit on my Mom or Grandmother's lap and learn quilting secrets handed down from generation to generation. I did learn to sew when I was 12 because I was intrigued by my Aunt's ability to make her own clothes. It was the mid-60s and I was very interested in having more fashionable clothes since I wore a school uniform every day.
Fast forward 20 years to 1987. I'm pregnant with my first son and those 'Moses' baskets are all the rage as cradles. I didn't have the extra $100 or more to buy one but I still had my Singer sewing machine that my Mom bought for me when I was 12! I bought a plain basket, fabric, lace, ribbon, and foam and several hours later I too had a unique Moses basket with bumpers, small quilt, and 2 fitted sheets for the foam mattress.
I started actively quilting a few years later, after my second son was born. I talked about it for a couple of years and my Mom, wonderful supporter that she was, bought me my first quilting magazine subscription. I was hooked! I enrolled in a class at a local quilt shop with a friend and I was on my way.
Managing a full time job and family along with raising my children didn't leave much time for quilting early on. I've been able to devote much more time to my obsession in the last 12 years and have even added a long arm to my collection. I love spending time in my studio designing, cutting, and sewing. There's always something on the design wall and at least 20 projects ready to go. I started creating art quilts and thread painting in the last 3 years which has given me the opportunity to go back to my painting and sketching roots.
